How the hell am I going to do that?
I don’t know yet. Not really. I have a platform to accept the money and other platforms to shout as loud as I can about what I’m doing, but $24,000 is still a lot of money.
That amount would cover the costs for a 6-issue run of Renowned which roughly breaks down like this:
$3,000 for production costs. That’s development and concepts, pencils, inks, colors, and covers. I handle letters, layout, and the review process.
$1260 for printing and distribution. That’s physical copies, shipping materials, and shipping costs.
So it’s a little over $4k each issue. Which, for what I get in the end, is a phenomonel value. But it’s still a pretty steep hill to climb at this stage of the game so while the scripts are the backbone and the art is critical and printing is important… right now, nothing is more important than marketing.
Unfortunately, marketing is the hardest part of this entire process.
But people do it! I’m going to try, and part of that effort is this “vault.” The word “blog” already feels like something I’ll have to explain to my children, but I think it still holds relevance. It’s like a drip pan for search engines—something to catch stray eyes that might happen onto my stuff.
And as this thing grows? Maybe the vault becomes more like a bucket. Then maybe a bathtub. Dunk tank. Whale enclosure?
My hope is that it’ll be like a peek into the factory, a tour behind the stage… or maybe that scene in Spongebob when all his little brain people set fire to the filing cabinets.
